Port Hedland is the major port for the iron ore industry of the Pilbara. The Visitor Centre offers tours of BHP Billiton ore-crushing works and Port Authority workings, Dampier Salt and BHP Boodarie Iron, as well as tours of the town and the Nelson Point Aboriginal Site. You can also book a fishing charter, an outback safari or a whale watching tour in season. Visit the Dalgety House Museum and the Don Rhodes Open Air Museum to learn about the history of the region.

For a great view over the town go the the top of the Observation Tower or the Koombana Lookout. There is another lookout at Pretty Pool where you can look out at the 'Stairway to the Moon' on the beach. From October to March you can see flatback turtles nesting on Cemetery Beach, Cooke Point, Munda Beach and Pretty Pool. A range of accommodation types are offered - backpacker hostels, motels, hotels and caravan parks.
