The Kimberley is a hot, remote region with spectacular scenery, best visited in the winter months. Derby is a main centre in the West Kimberley with some fabulous national parks nearby. The best road north from Derby is the Great Northern Highway via Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek. Fitzroy Crossing is a small, predominantly Aboriginal settlement, on the banks of the Fitzroy River. Halls Creek's main attraction is a natural limestone formation called the China Wall. The Purnululu National Park, better known as the Bungle Bungle National Park is east of Halls Creek.
Near the town of Kununurra you can see Lake Argyle and visit the Argyle Diamond Mine. Tourists with four wheel drive vehicles can take an alternative route from Derby along the Gibb River Road or you can book a 4WD tour to see the area. Mt Hart Homestead has accommodation and you can explore the Lennard River Gorge and the Bell Gorge, both featuring beautiful waterfalls. Farther along you will find Adcock Gorge, Galavans Gorge, Manning Gorge and Barnett River Gorge. A number of stations offer accommodation as you travel north, the last of which is the El Questro Station and Wilderness Park.
