The Great Sandy Desert is remote, uninhabited and records some of the highest temperatures in Australia. The township of Halls Creek sits at the edge of the Desert and relies on mining and cattle industries. Wolfe Creek Crater National Park is 145 kilometres from Halls Creek via the Tanami Road and is accessible by 4WD only. It features the second largest crater in the world from which fragments of a meteorite have been collected. Australia's remotest National Park is Rudall River National Park, to the west of the Canning Stock Route in the vicinity of Lake Dora.
The only safe way to see the desert is with a tour group such as Diamantina Touring. You can follow the Canning Stock Route in 4WD convoy either in their vehicles or as 'tagalong' in your own vehicle. It is a hard driving trip crossing the Great Sandy Desert, the Little Sandy Desert and large portions of the Gibson Desert. You will see constantly changing scenery in the desert wilderness and provides great opportunities for impressive photographs. The trip follows a series of wells along the stock route.
Location
The Great Sandy Desert lies between the Pilbara and the Kimberley.
