FITZROY CROSSING
Where highway crosses the Fitzroy River

Fitzroy Crossing is a facinating outback township which developed as a suitable point for crossing the Fitzroy River. There is now a good bridge where the Great Northern Highway crosses the river. Tourists mainly come to Fitzroy Crossing as a base from which to explore the nearby Devonian Reef National Parks. While in town, be sure to pay a visit to the Crossing Inn, the oldest pub in the Kimberley. There is also an old Fitzroy Crossing township a few km away and near which you will find the old low level crossing.

There are a couple of tour companies in the town offering trips to Geikie Gorge, Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge. The beautiful Geikie Gorge National Park is great for fishing, birdwatching and boat cruises in season. Tunnel Creek has an interesting system of bat caves with stalactites. Windjana Gorge is a stunning three and a half km long gorge featuring walking trails, pools, abundant birdlife and rich vegetation. Fitzroy Crossing has a couple of hotel-motels, caravan parks and a backpacker hostel.

Location
Fitzroy Crossing is in the Kimberley, 258 km from Derby.

Activities
Base yourself in Fitzroy Crossing and visit the National Parks by 4WD or tour bus. Enjoy spectacular scenery, aboriginal rock art, bat caves, birdwatching, river cruises, bushwalking and perhaps spot a crocodile.
