Shepparton is a major centre of the fruit-growing region of the Goulburn Valley. The city is home to the famous canneries SPC and Ardmona and is the headquarters of the Goulburn Valley irrigation system. Several festivals are held each year to celebrate the importance of food production in the region. These include International Dairy Week in January, Mooroopna Fruit Salad Day in February, the Agricultural Show in October and the Strawberry & Wine Festival in November.
SPC offer tours of the factory and Belstack Strawberry Farm is open in strawberry season. Take the children to SPC Ardmona Kidstown Adventure Playground - an innovative community project featuring thrilling and challenging play equipment. Entry is by gold coin donation.
To learn about the history of Shepparton visit Shepparton Museum and stroll around the Historic Precinct. Take time out at Shepparton Art Gallery to view artworks from the colonial era to the present day. The Aboriginal Keeping Place has displays and demonstrations of aboriginal culture as well as aboriginal arts and crafts for sale.
Victoria Park Lake is a lovely spot for a picnic, a swim or some bird watching and the Information Centre is conveniently located by the lake. Emerald Bank Heritage Farm at Kialla demonstrates traditional farming practices such as a dairy, a blacksmith, animal nursery and farm machinery.
