RUTHERGLEN
For a great wine tasting destination!

The old gold-mining town of Rutherglen is now the centre of an important winemaking region. The town has many historic buildings to admire, some of which are now used as antique shops, country pubs and cafes. Visit the local Historical Museum and the Rose of Sharon Goldmining Museum to learn about the history of the region. Fortified wines, muscat in particular, are a specialty of the local wine producers, although reds and whites are also produced. Follow the Muscat Trail, designed as a cycling tour of the district, and you will see some wineries, lakes, pioneer cemetery, brandy distillery and some historic landmarks.

Some of the annual festivals held in Rutherglen include Tastes of Rutherglen Gourmet Getaway, Winery Walkabout, Rutherglen Wine Show and Rutherglen Tour de Muscat. Buller's Bird Park has over 100 native and exotic bird species and Milawa Cheese Company has cheese making demonstrations. Lake Moodemere is popular for picnics, fishing and boating. There are an enormous number of wineries in the region and you can even tour around them in a horse-drawn Cobb & Co coach or by a camel trek.
