PHILLIP ISLAND
Where the peguins ride motorbikes!

Phillip Island is a popular day trip destination from Melbourne, being only a two hour drive away. The most important attraction is the fairy penguin parade, which is the No. 1 tourist attraction in Victoria and not to be missed. At dusk each evening the little penguins return from the sea to their nests in the sand dunes. There is an educational visitor centre, boardwalks and viewing areas designed so that the penguins are not disturbed by the tourists. While on Phillip Island, visit the Koala Conservation Centre and the Phillip Island Wildlife Park. Bird watchers will be interested in the mutton bird rookery at Cape Woolamai and there are some walking trails in the area.

For those planning a longer holiday there are some great surfing beaches on the island including Berrys Beach, Cat Bay, Smiths Beach, Summerland and Woolamai. The Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit is the home of the motorcycle Grand Prix and there is a Visitor Centre with displays. Most accommodation offered on the island is at Cowes - hostels, motels, apartments, guesthouses, country houses, caravan parks and camping.
