Castlemaine is a historic gold mining town with some fine heritage buildings. Take a tour around town to see Castlemaine Market, Bank of Australasia and Goldsmith's Hotel, Theatre Royal and the Commercial Hotel. Be sure to visit the excellent Castlemaine Art Gallery as well as the Historical Museum. Old Castlemaine Gaol offers guided tours, a restaurant and bunk-bed accommodation. Visit Castlemaine Botanical Gardens and have a picnic by the lake then stroll the walking trails of the Kaweka Wildflower Reserve.

The Castlemaine State Festival is held every second year and features popular music, opera, dance, theatre, street performances and visual arts. Australia's only Dingo Farm is between Castlemaine and Chewton. It has a dingo breeding program and is open daily for visitors. Take a trip to the Castlemaine-Chewton Historic Reserve for gold fossicking, bushwalking, bird watching, spotlight tours and night walks. Accommodation in Castlemaine is plentiful, including motels, hotels, apartments, cottages and caravan parks.
