Beechworth is an old gold-mining town which attracts many tourists with the old-world character of its historic buildings. The town has a busy arts precinct with many local works on display and here you will find antique shops, gift shops, specialty shops and galleries. Visit Beechworth Galleries, Buckland Gallery, Burke Museum, the Carriage Museum and Beechworth Historic Park. Several wineries are open to the public or you can take a historic tour on the Beechworth Stagecoach. With a permit, you can try your hand a gold-panning or gem fossicking.

Lake Sambell in Beechworth is a popular recreation area for boating, fishing, swimming and waterskiing. There is a 5 km walking track from Lake Sambell to Lake Kerferd. Other activities to enjoy while on holiday include horseriding, abseiling, mountain-bike riding, 4 wheel driving and trail-bike riding. Take the Gorge Scenic Drive for a 5 km tour of the region's lookouts, picnic spots, black cypress pines and waterfalls. For your holiday accommodation, there are several caravan parks and a good number of motels, or try a cabin, cottage, guesthouse or bed and breakfast.
