Ballarat is a charming old gold-mining city full of history and it is worth taking a stroll around the city centre to admire all the heritage buildings. The Ballarat Fine Art Gallery has a special goldfields art collection along with many other historically important works. Have a day out at Sovereign Hill, a recreation of an old gold-mining town. There are many hands-on activities and a team of actors make for a very entertaining experience. Also visit the Eureka Stockade Centre which illustrates the Eureka story.

The Ballarat Wildlife and Reptile Park, Ballarat Tramway Museum, Ballarat Botanical Gardens, Hymettus Cottage Garden, Avenue of Honour and Arch of Victory, Ballarat Aviation Museum, Kryal Castle, James Egan's Gallery and Yuulong Lavender Estate are some of the many other places to visit. There are several beautiful lakes for picnics and water sports. Ballarat has a good number of hotels and motels, caravan parks, hostels and camp grounds.
