Bairnsdale, on the Mitchell River, is East Gippsland's only city. It is an ideal base for exploring the surrounding countryside, especially the Lakes and the Mitchell River National Park. You can learn about the aboriginal heritage by visiting Krowathunkooloong Keeping Place for talks, displays, guided tours and arts and crafts. Follow part of the Bataluk Cultural Trail to see aboriginal archaeological sites such as canoe trees and shell middens. Pop in to St Mary's Roman Catholic Church to view the amazing ceiling painted by Italian artist Francesco Floriani in the style of the Sistine Chapel.
The town has a historical museum and Nicholson Street Gallery, both worth a visit. You can also call in to Nicholson River Winery and Green Gates Gallery at the township of Nicholson. The Mitchell River National Park features the Den of Nargun which is a cavern with stalagmite and stalactite formations. The park has a colony of satin bowerbirds and abundant flora including native orchids. While in Bairnsdale, stay in a country cottage, holiday retreat, caravan park, hotel or motel.
