QUEENSTOWN
Take a tour of the copper mines…

Queenstown was a copper mining town. The stark scenery of the denuded surrounding hills and mountains was caused by the pollution from copper smelting and timber cutting to feed the furnaces. A number of different tours of the mines are offered. The Galley Museum is a photographic museum detailing the history of the local area. The lookout known as Spion Kop is located in the centre of town and gives the viewer an amazing perspective on the devastated landscape. West Coast Wilderness Railway runs on a restored line through the wilderness from Queenstown to Strahan.

Lake Margaret Power Station is a hydro-electric power station in the Yolande River Valley north of Queenstown, the second oldest working station in Australia. Accommodation in Queenstown is more economical than on the coast. You can choose from a guesthouse, motel, bed and breakfast, cottage, cabin or caravan park.
