Launceston is the second largest city in Tasmania. It is known for its many 19th century Georgian buildings and you can get a pamphlet to guide you around the significant heritage buildings. The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery has a fine collection of Australian colonial art and Penny Royal World has reconstructed 19th century mills and attractions. Waverley Woollen Mills offers conducted tours of the mill and sales of garments. Car enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the National Automobile Museum.

Visit Cataract Gorge Reserve which has a chairlift, a suspension bridge, great views and nature walks. It is a lovely spot for a picnic. City Park has beautiful trees and gardens, a conservatory, a kangaroo enclosure and a monkey island. There is a good supply of accommodation in Launceston, ranging from motels and hotels to cottages, bed and breakfasts, holiday apartments and caravan parks.
