Devonport is the arrival port for the car ferries which regularly travel across Bass Strait from Melbourne and Sydney. There is plenty to see and do in town and tour companies will take you out to the rainforest areas. Springlawn Nature Walk is a one-hour walk for tourists. To learn about the history of Devonport, visit the Tasmanian Maritime Museum and the Tiagarra Aboriginal Culture Centre and Museum. The historic home, Home Hill, was the home of Dame Enid and Joseph Lyons and is open most days for visitors.

Imaginarium Science Centre has interactive exhibits for learning about science and the Devonport Gallery and Arts Centre specialises mainly in artworks by Tasmanian artists. The Don River Railway offers a fun train ride to Coles Beach. Nearby Ulverstone has a Local History Museum. Chocolate lovers will want to visit the House Of Anvers where there is a chocolate museum and a viewing room to watch the chocolates being made. Devonport has a good supply of motels, bed and breakfasts, holiday apartments, backpacker hostels and caravan parks.
