The industrial city of Whyalla is the second largest city in South Australia. It has a large steelworks which offers tours three times a week where you can learn about the process of steelmaking. Visit the Whyalla Maritime Museum to see some excellent historical exhibits and to have a guided tour of the former HMAS Whyalla. Mt Laura Homestead Museum is a National Trust museum which houses a pictorial record of colonial times and interesting memorabilia. Also on the site are a pioneer cottage, Nicolson Engine Shed and a Telecommunications Museum. Whyalla Fauna and Reptile Park is a large reserve where you can see free ranging native wildlife.
For views out over the city go up to Hummock Hill. You can have a picnic at Ada Ryan Gardens on the southern slope of the Hill. The Gardens have a duck pond and native fauna. The Whyalla foreshore has safe shallow swimming beaches, a redeveloped marina and boat launching facility, a fishing jetty and a popular playground. Take a trip to Whyalla Conservation Park at sunrise or sunset for some great photographic opportunities and follow the walking trail to the top of Wild Dog Hill. The Park is located 10 km north of the city. Book your accommodation in a motel along the foreshore, a hotel or a caravan park.
