COOBER PEDY
Australia's opal mining capital...

Coober Pedy is the world's largest opal mining town. It is a unique place due to the fact that about 80 per cent of the population live in underground dwellings to avoid the extreme heat. Even modern motels and houses are underground. The best way to see the sights is by bus tour. You can visit the Oldtimers Mine, the Underground Catacomb Anglican Church, the Big Winch, the Underground Pottery and Crocodile Harry's house. Tourists can fossick for opals at the Jeweller's Shop opal field.

In March there is an annual Opal Festival. Another attraction is the Pichi Richi Steam Train adventure in the Pichi Richi Pass. Accommodation is offered both underground and above ground. There are a number of motels, private hotels, caravan parks and camping grounds.

Locations
Coober Pedy is located 846 km north of Adelaide.

Activities
Coober Pedy is fascinating for opal mining, fossicking and underground houses.
