The historic city of Rockhampton has many beautiful and elegant old buildings which may be viewed on a one hour's heritage walk around the city centre. Some of the significant ones are the Post Office, Customs House, Criterion Hotel, Supreme Court and the Union Trustee Chambers. Make sure you visit the Rockhampton Art Gallery and the Dreamtime Cultural Centre. Rockhampton's Botanic Gardens have many tropical plants, a Japanese Garden and a small zoo. St Aubins Village is a historical village open to the public daily.

Mount Archer Lookout has great views of the city and a bushwalking trail. North of the city travel to the Cammoo Caves and Olsen's Capricorn Caverns. Another attraction is the Koorana Crocodile Farm. Rockhampton's nearest beach area is Yeppoon. Stay in Rockhampton in one of the many motels or look for a backpacker hostel or caravan park.

Rockhampton is on the Fitzroy River, the capital of the Capricorn region.
