NORMANTON
Home to the Gulflander Train

Normanton was established on the Norman River, near the coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria. The main industries are grazing, recreational fishing, mining and tourism. One of the town's greatest tourist attractions is the Gulflander Train and the Railway Station, which is listed by the National Trust. The train runs a service to Croydon, 150 km away, once a week. A significant historic site is Burke and Wills last northern camp which is to be found a short drive out of town and is marked by a monument and a plaque.

Take a stroll around town to see the historic buildings including 'The Purple Pub', the Albion Hotel, and the Bank of New South Wales. Normanton is known as the 'Barramundi Capital of the North' and you can book a fishing expedition with Norman River Fishing and Cruises or just a wildlife spotting cruise. Bird watchers come to Normanton after the wet season to see migratory wading birds such as the brolga and sarus crane on the wetlands to the north. The best time to visit is in the dry season from April to November. Accommodation is offered in a limited number of hotels, motels and caravan parks.

Location
Normanton is 700km west of Cairns in the Gulf Savannah Region.

Activities
Normanton offers great barramundi fishing, river cruises, birdwatching, historic buildings and a rail tour.
