Great destination for the keen fisherman!


Mornington Island is administered by the local aboriginal community and permission must be granted to visit the island. Visitors must apply six weeks in advance to the Mornington Shire Council by mail and there is no guarantee that permission will be granted. Guests of the Birri Fishing Resort on Mornington Island do not need prior permission. The resort is accessed by private airstrip. The resort offers sport fishing with all gear supplied and professional masters to lead the expeditions on their ocean vessels. Aluminum boats are supplied for river fishing and crabbing. There is also a clay target range.

The Muyinda Aboriginal Corporation runs an aboriginal arts and crafts business at Gununa, the main settlement on the Island. There is also an aboriginal dance group which performs traditional dances. Gulf Freight Services operate a weekly barge service between Karumba and Mornington Island. Accommodation is offered in units at the Birri Fishing Resort or for other options apply to the Mornington Shire Council.

Mornington Island is in the Gulf of Carpentaria, north of Burketown.

Mornington Island has a traditional aboriginal culture, aboriginal arts and crafts, aboriginal dancing. There is also a fishing resort for sport fishing.
