MACKAY
The sugar capital of Queensland!


Mackay is the centre of a sugar-producing area and has a major port and a Bulk Sugar Terminal. Families will enjoy the quiet beach areas of Harbour Beach, Far Beach, Blacks Beach, Town Beach, Illawong Beach, Bucasia Beach and Eimeo Beach. These beaches are not suitable for surfing. Scuba divers will enjoy a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef. Farleigh Sugar Mill and the Polstone Sugar Farm offer tours between July and December. The Botanic Gardens in Queens Park are worth a visit, as is Illawong Fauna Sanctuary.

Walkerston, 15 km from Mackay, is the location of Greenmount Historic Homestead which is open to the public every day except Saturday and features the restored residence of a successful cattle grazier from the late nineteenth century. The National Parks of Cape Hillsborough and Eungella lie just inland from Mackay and feature spectacular rainforest scenery. Choose your accommodation from the many motels, resorts, holiday apartments or caravan parks.

Mackay is a coastal city located halfway between Brisbane and Cairns.
