Lawn Hill (Boodjamulla) National Park features a spectacular gorge formed by Lawn Hill Creek and is one of Queensland's best national parks. It is a beautiful 'oasis', contrasting with the surrounding countryside. There is an abundance of native wildlife within the waterways and lush forest areas. Look for freshwater crocodiles, northern snapping turtles, wallaroos, tiny bats and ringtail possums. You can hire a canoe and explore the 4 km length of the gorge. Indari Falls are a lovely place to go swimming.
The Waanyi Aboriginal people have strong cultural ties to the area, and you can see aboriginal cave paintings and etchings in the rock shelters at the gorge. Bird watchers will enjoy spotting sandstone shrike-thrushes, egrets, bitterns, kites and the rare and spectacular purple-crowned fairy wren. Bushwalkers can follow the numerous walking trails through the area. There is a camping ground with facilities at Lawn Hill and 4WD vehicles are recommended for travelling to the area as the roads can be rough. Also in the Park are the Riversleigh Fossil Fields which are open to the public. It is a rich fossil mammal site and a map is provided to indicate fossil sites that can be viewed.
