The island paradise of Lady Elliot Island is the most southerly island within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the only coral cay with an airport. It is a popular destination for divers and snorkellers wishing to explore the coral reefs. There are ten dive sites with excellent visibility including Lighthouse Bommie, Coral Gardens, Moiri and Shark Pool. A number of shipwrecks are accessible for divers. The island is a birdwatcher's paradise, with about 57 different species of birds - crested terns, black-napped terns, brown boobies, black noddies, buff-banded rails, reef egrets, oyster-catchers, plovers, godwits and gulls.
Sea turtles use the island for nesting between October and February and humpback whales can be seen passing by on their migration from June to October. Take a reef walking tour to observe clams, sea cucumbers, starfish and numerous varieties of coral in the waters near the shore. The resort provides suitable footwear. You can also see the coral and tropical fish from the relative comfort of a glass bottom boat.
Explore the island by following the walking trails and make sure to visit the historic Lady Elliot Island Lighthouse. The accommodation at the resort has a casual island atmosphere with no TV, radio or telephones. There are beachfront units, reef units, large family rooms or permanent tent cabins.
