KURANDA
Watch for colourful butterflies!

A visit to Kuranda is a must for holidaymakers in Cairns. The best way to reach this pretty town is by the scenic railway which winds its way up the mountain and through 15 tunnels along the way. The historic railway station is an attraction in itself, with its extraordinary floral displays. Take the return journey via the Skyrail, the longest gondola cableway in the world. The trip takes you over the rainforest canopy and there is a stopping point in the middle where you can explore the forest floor on a series of boardwalks. Visit Kuranda on a market day for an experience of colourful hustle and bustle.

Attractions include the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, the Aviary, Birdworld, and Kuranda Wildlife Noctarium. Visit the Barron Falls which are magnificent in the wet season. Kuranda Riverboat and Rainforest Tours offer both guided walks as well as boat cruises. There are plenty of great restaurants and cafes as well as food stalls at the markets. If you wish to stay in the area, there are several hostels, bed and breakfasts, rainforest resorts, lodges and a caravan park.

Kuranda is 27 km north west from Cairns.
