The Gulf Savannah Region is known for its rugged coastlines, wilderness areas and isolated communities. It is a great destination for a 4WD holiday, either an organised tour or a self-drive adventure with at least two vehicles. Visit the Undara Volcanic National Park for a guided tour of the longest and largest lava tube system on earth. Continue on to Mt Surprise and visit the museum, then travel to the topaz field of the Elizabeth Creek Gem Field. The historic town of Croydon was once a booming gold-mining town. Normanton is known for barramundi fishing and the port of Karumba is known for its commercial and recreational prawn, crab and barramundi fishing. Hire a boat, cruise the river or take a flight across to Mornington Island.
Head west towards the cattle town of Burketown, visiting Leichhardt Falls on the way. Next stop is Lawn Hill National Park and beautiful Lawn Hill Gorge. Here you will find some lovely spots for swimming and canoeing (beware of the crocodiles), walking tracks, aboriginal rock art and the Riversleigh Fossil Field. There is a camping ground at Lawn Hill and farther west is Escott Lodge which has caravan and camping facilities.
