The city of Gladstone is the second largest port on the east coast of Australia. It is an industrial city with the world's largest alumina plant and also exports vast quantities of coal and grain. You can take a guided tour of the CQ Port Authority or of Queendland Alumina. The Gladstone Marina is the destination for one of Australia's premier blue water events, the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race, each Easter. The annual Harbour Festival is held at the Marina each year. Around the city you can visit the Gladstone Art Gallery and Museum, Cedar Galleries and the Gladstone Tondoon Botanic Gardens.
Port Curtis Historic Village lies 26 km west of Gladstone on the Bruce Highway and is the site of a Tourist Information Centre. Lake Awoonga is renowned for its fishing - it is stocked with barramundi, mullet and mangrove jack. The surrounding area is lovely for bushwalks, bird watching, picnics and native wildlife. Quoin Island is only 4 km offshore at the entrance to Port Curtis and is popular for water sports and bushwalking. From Gladstone you can take a charter boat out to the reef or the islands or go sport fishing. Gladstone offers a selection of accommodation in motels, holiday villas and caravan parks.
