Great holiday destination for families, surfers, and backpackers!
Coolangatta is a twin town with Tweed Heads, just across the border. It is a very popular holiday destination for families, surfers and backpackers. Coolangatta has a patrolled beach for swimmers and the surfers like to go to nearby Greenmount and Kirra beaches. Farther north are the beach areas of Bilinga and Tugun. Currumbin Bird Sanctuary, just to the north, features the feeding of rainbow lorikeets as well as many other species of native birds, reptiles and mammals. Olson's Bird Gardens are 9 km inland from Currumbin Beach.
Coolangatta has a great shopping area for beachfront shops, restaurants and cafes. The nightlife is lively in the local pubs and clubs, and there are markets along the foreshore on the second Sunday of the month. Just across the border are the Twin Towns Services Club and Seagulls Club. Go up to the headland of Point Danger and look out to sea for whales and dolphins. Take a Tiger Moth or Helicopter joyflights from Coolangatta Airport or a Tandem Skydive. Accommodation choices range from luxury international resorts to backpacker budget hostels and caravan parks and everything in between.
