CLONCURRY
Home to the Royal Flying Doctors

The outback town of Cloncurry was the birthplace of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. John Flynn Place is a museum dedicated to Rev. John Flynn who began the service to bring medical services to the outback. Copper mining was the basis for the success of the town which is set for another boom period due to the recent establishment of the Ernest Henry copper-gold mine 38 km NE of the town. Tours run from May to September on Wednesdays and Fridays subject to numbers. Tourists can also visit the site of the original Great Australian Mine south of the town. Another interesting museum is the The Mary Kathleen Memorial Park and Museum where you can learn about the history of the region.

Some historic sites to explore are the old post office and courthouse, the Afghan cemetery and Chinese cemetery where many Chinese gold miners are buried. Amateur collectors can fossick for gems at a number of sites around the region. Some local events of interest are the Cloncurry Annual Show in June, the Stockmans Challenge in July, the Ernest Henry Art Show in September and the Merry Muster in August. Cloncurry has a number of motels and caravan parks to cater for tourists.
