CAMOOWEAL
Where to spot the biggest road trains!

The tiny town of Camooweal is the first stop for travellers arriving in Queensland from the Northern Territory and consequently calls itself the 'Gateway to the Northern Territory/Queensland'. Be sure to pay a visit to Freckleton's Store which has been operating since 1900. The Barkly Tableland Heritage Centre & Museum has a display of historical memorabila about the droving days. There is an annual Drover's Camp and Reunion Festival held mid year. Today the town is a resting place for the drivers of the huge transports and road-trains passing through, carrying millions of dollars worth of livestock and general goods.

Visit the pub to soak up the friendly atmosphere of an outback hotel. The Camooweal Caves National Park is located 8 km south of the town. Exploration of the caves is for experienced cavers only and it is necessary to contact the NPWS or the local police before visiting. The caves are an intricate system of underground dolomite caves which fill with water in the wet season. They are home to ghost bats, owls and other wildlife. Accommodation in Camooweal is limited to the hotel or the camping ground.

Location
Camooweal is located 330 km south of Burketown, 188 km from Mount Isa and just 12 km from the Northern Territory border.

Activities
When passing through Camooweal, visit the pub, Freckleton's Store, Barkly Tableland Heritage Centre & Museum or the Camooweal Caves (with permission).
