The Burrum Coast National Park is 23000 ha of undeveloped wilderness accessible only by 4WD vehicle and featuring quiet beaches, wildflowers in season, heath, woodlands and teatree swamps. The town of Woodgate is an ideal access point for the national park. There is a caravan park for 4WD only and a lovely flat beach for fishing and sailing. There are several walking trails of varying lengths taking you into the park to see the birdhide, boardwalk, waterbirds, wallum heath, mangroves, swamps and saltpans. There is a fishing platform on the Gregory River.
The other part of the National Park is the Kinkuna section, south of Bundaberg. Bush camping is permitted but permits must be pre-purchased beforehand. Access is by 4WD only and campers must be self-sufficient, including drinking water. The local beach, Palm Beach, is on a beautiful unspoilt stretch of coastline and you can camp behind the sand dunes in the shade of casuarina trees. The area is abundant with wildflowers in the spring and the local wildlife includes lizards, endangered turtles, sugar and feather tailed gliders, bats and carnivorous marsupial mice. It is also a good place for birdwatching and bushwalking.
