Birdsville is a very isolated small township at the northern end of the dangerous Birdsville Track. Tourists like to visit at the time of the annual Birdsville Races, which are held in September. The population swells from 100 to 6000 for the races. The most famous building in the town is the Birdsville Hotel and you can also visit the Birdsville Working Museum. 4WD adventurers regularly pass through the town with the intention of travelling the 500 km of the Birdsville track.

To cross the Simpson Desert National Park it is vital to have all the necessary emergency supplies and to travel in 4WD convoy. A permit is required from the Police Station in Birdsville. The best way to travel to Birdsville is by charter plane. Accommodation is limited to the Birdsville Hotel/Motel or Birdsville Caravan Park. At the time of the Birdsville Races, the only accommodation option is camping.

Birdsville is a small outback township 1600 km west of Brisbane.
