ULURU
Formerly known as Ayers Rock...

Uluru, formerly known as Ayers Rock, is part of the world-heritage listed Kata Tjuta National Park. It rises 348 metres above the surrounding countryside and is a wonderful subject for Northern Territory landscape photography at sunrise or sunset as it changes colour. The rock is considered a sacred site to the Anangu aboriginal people, who jointly manage the park with Parks Australia. The traditional owners ask that tourists respect their culture and not climb the rock. Visit the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park Cultural Centre to learn about the rock and book tours around the base.

To walk all the way around the rock is a distance of 9.4 km. It is recommended that you start very early in the morning before it gets too hot as this is a desert area. There are two short walks on which you will hear traditional aboriginal stories. The Maruku Arts and Crafts Complex has aboriginal artworks by the Western Desert people and local artists. There are some caves around the base of the rock with aboriginal rock paintings. Accommodation is offered at Yulara, just outside the park. You can choose from motels, resorts, hostels, apartments and a camping ground.
