TIWI ISLANDS
A unique Aboriginal cultural destination...

The Tiwi Islands, Bathurst and Melville Islands, are home to the Tiwi Aboriginal people. You can fly to the island with a tour group for a one or two day tour. A permit is required from the Tiwi Land Council if you visit privately. The islands have dense rainforest, rock pools and sandy beaches. Your tour will include visits to the Catholic Missions, the unique burial grounds with carved wooden burial poles and the opportunity to view the distinctive arts and crafts of the Tiwi people. They are known for their batik and silk-screened clothing, woven bangles, painted conch shells, carvings and pottery.

Nguiu is the main settlement on Bathurst Island. Here you can visit the Patakijiyali Museum which explains the culture and mythology of the Tiwi people. Melville has two settlements at Milikapiti and Pularumpi. The Taracumbie Falls are there as well as swimming holes and a nine hole golf course. If you are staying overnight, all meals and camping accommodation are provided in your tour costs. An alternative to flying is to take the two hour ferry trip from Darwin.
