An outback mining town…


Tennant Creek is an old gold mining town on the Barkly Tablelands. At the Battery Hill Mining Centre you can take a tour of the underground mine, look through the Minerals Museum and try gold panning. The Nyinnka Nyunyu Cultural Centre is an award-winning aboriginal art and culture centre with a gallery, gift shop and cafe. The Overland Telegraph Station, 11 km north of Tennant Creek, now operates as a museum.

Tuxworth-Fullwood House is another museum with memorabilia from the mining days. For a panoramic view of Tennant Creek, go up to the Bill Allen Lookout where you can get a 360 deg. View. Take a trip to the 'Pebbles' which is a spectacular granite outcrop. The Mary Ann Dam is an ideal place for a picnic, a swim or a fishing trip. Tennant Creek also has a race course and a golf course. Accommodation is offered in the local motels, caravan parks, backpacker hostel or camping grounds.
