PORT KEATS
An Aboriginal Community...

Port Keats (Wadeye) is a tribal aboriginal community situated on the western edge of the Daly River reserve area. The town is built inland on a tidal creek and is about half an hour's drive from the nearest beaches. It can be reached by air from Darwin or Kununurra, by 4WD vehicle in the dry season or by a two-day barge trip from Darwin. It is important to first apply for permission from the Thamarrurr Regional Council before entering the area.

There is a growing population of around 2000 people belonging to seven different tribal groups. The most common language is Murrinh-Patha, spoken by the Kardu Diminin clan. Students attend Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic School, learning English and Murrinh-Patha. There is a craft centre where the women make batik clothing and dilly bags to sell to the tourists. The men make boomerangs and didgeridoos. There are some talented aboriginal artists in the community.

Location
Port Keats (Wadeye) is located 400 km south west of Darwin or one hour's flying time.

Activities
