The Eastern MacDonnell Ranges are known for spectacular scenery, bushwalking, gem fossicking and Aboriginal rock art. The Arltunga Historical Reserve offers guided tours of historic gold mining sites and restored stone buildings. You can fossick for zircon, garnet, beryl, apatite and tourmaline at nearby Gemtree. Visit N'Dhala Gorge Nature Park and follow the 1.5 km walking trail to see the Aboriginal rock carvings. Trephina Gorge Nature Park has impressive sheer cliffs, panoramic views, rock pools, sandy creek beds and prolific native wildlife. There are long and short walking trails and camp sites.

The Ross River Resort has accommodation and camp sites and offers horse riding and camel riding. The township of Aritunga was a gold-mining town and you can explore some old mine shafts and even try panning for gold. Ruby Gap Nature Park is a beautiful undeveloped park accessible only by four wheel drive vehicles. You can bush camp there but bring all supplies including water.
