ARNHEM LAND
The heart of aboriginal culture...

All Arnhem Land is Aboriginal land and visitors need a permit to enter. This can be obtained from the Northern Land Council in Jabiru or via acredited Northern Territory Tour Guides. The township of Nhulunbuy on the Gove Peninsula has good facilities and is a good base from which to explore the region and its aboriginal culture. It has pristine white beaches ideal for fishing, sailing, diving and snorkelling. Take a tour of the bauxite mine while you are in the town, and don't miss a visit to the aboriginal art centres of Nambara Arts and Crafts near Nhulunbuy and Buku Larrngay Mulka in Yirrkala.

The Coburg Peninsula is a wonderful, remote area for great fishing, native flora and fauna, wonderful marine life for divers and sandy beaches. Arnhem includes a number of national parks including Barranyi (North Island) National Park, Caranbirini Conservation Reserve, Garig Gunak Barlu National Park and Limmen National Park. These areas have some walking trails, aboriginal rock art, great fishing spots and some bush camping locations. The best way to see the area is to join a tour from Darwin or even better yet go via Katherine. There are a few hotels and motels in Gove.
