The town of Yass lies on the Yass River, a tributary of the Murrumbidgee. The surrounding farmlands mainly specialise in wool-growing and agriculture and more recently in vineyards for wine-making. Yass holds an Arts-and-Crafts Festival in November and you can visit The Didgeridoo Man or Peter Crisp Art Glass all year round. History buffs will enjoy visiting the local museums and historic building of the town. Cooma Cottage is a colonial house open to the public.

Burrinjuck Dam is situated 57 km south-west of Yass. Visit the Burrinjuck Waters State Park on the western edge of the dam for a day of fishing, water skiing, bushwalking or just picnicking. Camping is also permitted. The Australian Paragliding Centre near Yass offers tandem flights and beginner courses. While in Yass, travel 54 km south-west to the village of Wee Jasper to visit the Wee Jasper Reserves and Carey's Cave. Yass has a number of caravan parks and plenty of motels and apartments for tourists as well as country cottages and farmstays.
