Nimbin is famous for its alternative culture, bush foods, alternative museum and permaculture. It is a favourite backpacker destination. The rich farmland around Nimbin is ideal for growing bananas, paw paws, mangoes and kiwi fruit, which has helped the community to prosper. Visit the Nimbin Museum to learn about the town's hippie history. Bush Factory is the town's old Butter Factory which has been converted into a theatre, recording studio, cafe and a studio for dance/video. Walk along the main street and enjoy the colourful shop fronts, the arts and crafts and the vegetarian cafes. Other attractions are the Djanbung Gardens and the Hemp Embassy.
Look out for the sacred Nimbin Rocks, 3 km south of the town. Also visit Nightcap National Park to explore the subtropical rainforest via some of the many walking tracks. The pretty nearby village of The Channon is noted for its artistic community. A shuttle bus runs every day between Byron Bay and Nimbin or contact the day tour operators in Byron Bay and the Gold Coast.
