The Mudgee area is known for its fine wines and an annual Wine Festival is held in September. There are many wineries and cellar doors to visit, most catering for large groups. Gold fossicking no longer requires a permit, just permission from the appropriate landowners, and is a popular tourist activity. Visit the Colonial Inn Museum to view the extensive historical collection. Many old buildings in Mudgee have been classified by the National Trust and are worth seeing. Don't miss the local galleries, arts and craft shops and markets.
Winderemere Dam, 24 km from Mudgee, is a popular spot for fishing, sailing, swimming, canoeing and boating. Camping is permitted at the Cudgegong Waters Park. Bushwalkers will enjoy a trip to Goulburn River National Park where a number of trails lead to spectacular lookouts. There are no formal campsites but bush-camping is permitted at several locations. Other local activities include olive oil tasting, honey factories, a miniature railway and horse riding. Mudgee has plenty of hotels and motels, as well as the options of bed and breakfasts, farmstays, guesthouses, cottages and caravan parks.
