Australia's highest mountain, Mount Kosciuszko, is in the Kosciuszko National Park. In summer, you can take the chairlift up the mountain from Thredbo then walk 6 km to the summit. The scenery is spectacular. There are many walking trails to follow through the mountains but it is important to pick up the free information sheets from the visitor centres. Carpets of wildflowers are a striking feature in summer, as well as the snow gums, pretty lakes and streams. There are basic huts and camping grounds for an overnight stay in the mountains. There is a daily entrance fee into the National Park.
In winter the main attraction is the ski resorts of Thredbo, Perisher Blue, Smiggins and Mount Selwyn where cross-country skiing is available as well as downhill, with slopes for beginners to advanced. Snow chains are essential when driving through the Park in the snow season. Travel the Alpine Way for views of the Snowy Mountains from Olsens Lookout and Scammell's Lookout. Visit the Tumut area to the north west and discover Buddong Falls and Yarrangobilly Caves. The ski resorts have an excellent choice of accommodation alternatives.
