GRIFFITH
Lots of fruit-picking jobs here!

Griffith is an important town in the fruit-growing Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area of the Riverina. It is popular with backpackers and others who like the fruit picking work from November to March. There is a thriving multicultural community, in particular the Italian community, which means that there are plenty of Italian restaurants to choose from. There are a number of fine wineries in the area including McWilliam's Wines and De Bortoli Wines, so that you can sample the local product or take a tour of a vineyard. For those interested in arts and crafts, visit the Regional Art Gallery and the Cottage Gallery. Take a self-drive tour through town to see the sights.

Don't miss the Pioneer Village Museum which features old and replicated buildings from the Riverina area. Explore the local walking tracks and lookouts and visit the fascinating Hermit's Cave. A great time to visit Griffith is Easter time, when the Food and Wind Festival is held. It features a street parade, street carnival, ball, family fun day, street theatre, rodeo, grape treading competition, fun run and the Venetian Carnival on the main canal. Travel 25 km north east of Griffith to see Cocoparra National Park. Take in some of the walks and see the waterfalls, wildflowers, birds and native animals. For fishing and water sports, try Lake Wyangan. For accommodation, look for country cottages and farmstays, or try the local hotels and motels, apartments or caravan parks.
