Gateway to the Warrumbungles!


Coonabarabran is known as the 'Gateway to the Warrumbungles' as well as being the Astronomy Capital of Australia. Come to the Visitor Centre to see the Australian Museum Diprotodon and Australia's Megafauna display. Skywatch Observatory is 2 km from town and offers telescope viewing sessions each evening. Siding Spring Observatory is 28 km from Coonabarabran and is open daily. The Australian Folk Music Heritage Centre presents the traditions of the Australian bush.

Take a tour to experience the local Aboriginal heritage. Crystal Kingdom has mineral and fossil display. For those interested in arts and crafts, there is Pilliga Pottery, Warrumbungle Glasshouse Gallery and the Art Gallery. A trip to the beautiful Warrumbungle National Park is a must. There are amazing rock formations, native fauna and flora, mapped walking tracks, picnic areas and camp sites. In Coonabarabran you can stay in a motel, farm cottage, guesthouse, homestead or caravan park.

Coonabarabran is 451 km north-west of Sydney between Gilgandra and Gunnedah.
