Byron Bay is situated on Australia's most easterly point, where the sun rises first each morning. It is famed for its great surfing beaches, relaxed lifestyle, arts and crafts and diversity of people. Some of the beaches to try for surfing and swimming include Clarks Beach, Wategos Beach, Little Wategos Beach, Belongil Beach, Main Beach and the nudist Tyagarah Beach. Take a drive up to Cape Byron, have a look at the lighthouse and walk right out to the cape and stand on the most easterly point. You might be lucky enough to see dolphins or whales frolicking in the ocean. A great spot for scuba diving is the marine park at Julian Rocks. For the more adventurous, have a go at hang gliding or the flying trapeze or a sea kayaking safari.
Take a drive or book a tour to see the beautiful rainforest areas nearby, such as Broken Head Nature Reserve. A number of festivals are held during the year, the one drawing the largest crowd being the Easter Blues & Roots Festival. The town has become known for its alternative healing and health practices and new age shops as well as an abundance of surf shops. There is a very popular market held on the first Sunday of each month. Byron offers a good nightlife scene with many live music venues and many different types of restaurants to choose from.
