WWOOF - work & accommodation on Organic Farms
Farmstay jobs, Backpacker farm work, organic farm workers, homestay jobs, countryside host families
WOOF Jobs - OVERVIEW:
Before you ask, WWOOF stands for 'Willing Workers on Organic Farms'. There are 1200 Organic farms in Australia which participate in the WWOOF scheme. If you're interested in agriculture or horticulture in general, this is fantastic as you can get hands-on practice in methods of organic farming, including biodynamics or permaculture - this is as much a learning experience as a job.
WWOOF work is a very popular backpacker job as it also gives you a chance to experience rural Australian life and meet local people. Many farmstays are also run by Vegetarians and Vegans who live a very healthy lifestyle. There are also 100 non-farm hosts, such as schools and guest houses. To join the organization, buy a WWOOF book, this gives you info and contact details of the farms participating. Then you call your chosen farm directly to arrange a stay.
TASKS:
Sowing seeds, planting, harvesting, compost making, wood cutting, feeding animals, milking. On placements which aren't farms you may be teaching, gardening, child minding, office work.
LOCATION:
Anywhere there is a farm signed up to the WWOOF scheme, a large number of organic farmstays are reasonably distanced or near by to major tourist destinations for backpackers so getting transport to the farm to work is not to difficult.
DURATION:
WWOOFing work allows a short stay that other backpacker farm jobs as the minimum stay can be a mere two nights, but the maximum stay is decided between yourself and the farmer you work for.
PAYMENT:
There's no pay as such, it's an arrangement between yourself and the farmer that you work for 3-6 hours per day in return for accommodation and food- the idea is to contribute half a day's work for each day's board. To find a farm though you need to buy a WWOOF book, which costs $55 for a single person or $65 for two people travelling together.
