Retail & Sales Employment in Australia
Cashiers, Shelf Stacking, Customer Service, General Shop Staff

OVERVIEW:
Working in a shop, simply put, can be a pretty straight forward way of earning some cash - hours are often nine to five (later on Thursdays) and Saturdays. Experience in stocktaking and operating a cash register can really help when applying, and excellent customer services skills are essential, you need to be helpful and polite.

If you have specialist product knowledge and have worked in a similar store before, try for something similar first. Dropping your CV in for the attention of the manager takes no time at all and can be effective. There aren't that many people who know DVD players or dive equipment inside out.

TASKS:
In big stores you may have to simply work the cash register day in day out, at smaller stores there will be a mix of tasks, including stocktaking, stacking shelves, serving, labelling, pricing, and helping customers with their enquiries. Backpackers employment that is temporary tends to be self packing or helping with stock takes.

LOCATION:
Everywhere, If you're CV dropping, don't forget any shopping malls and shopping centres near you, you can cover a whole mall within a couple of hours, and hopefully get a few call backs. There are also some retail job recruitment agencies thta may be able to help backpackers find work.

DURATION:
It is easier to find temporary work in the months before Christmas when most stores get busier, otherwise bosses tend to prefer candidates who can commit permanently. If you are a backpacker coming to Australia for a working holiday working as a shop assistant in retail is a good choice.

PAYMENT:
AU$10 to $AU45 an hour. Depends on your skills & experience and shop type. Some shops will employ you on a retainer and pay you a commission also on sales.
