Hospitality - OVERVIEW:
Easy work for travellers, and great for an Australian working holiday. You could work as a hotel receptionist or chambermaid, restaurant waitress or bartender in one of the city's coolest clubs. The situation is complicated though by the need for an RSA in New South Wales, Tasmania and Queensland. This is a certificate in the Responsible Service of Alcohol, which you get after a day's training. In NSW, if you want to work somewhere with pokies, you also need a Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) certificate. Check you local Traveller's Contact Point for details on courses, they run every day and cost $85 (RSA) and $75 (RCG).

In Australia, making coffee is a job in itself, if you don't have experience as a barista, consider a coffee skills course ($110). Do the courses as soon as you arrive, while you have the money, otherwise you'll find your opportunities in hospitality are limited. For current vacancies, just checking windows of businesses for 'positions vacant' notices can be pretty worthwhile. Local papers are also good, especially for waiting jobs, and dropping your CV into pubs, cafes, bars and restaurants you like the look of does no harm either.

Experience really gives you an advantage in this industry, but so does a good work attitude and old fashioned friendliness.

Hospitality - TASKS:
Hospitality includes a wide range of tasks, from taking orders in waiting jobs to organising schedules as a hotel receptionist or creating cocktails as a bartender. In smaller businesses, you may be waiting tables, greeting customers, making coffee and working the bar. Larger places will give you a more specialised role. Hospitality involves a high level of customer service, so whichever job you do, you will need to be pleasant and smiley. Not as easy as it sounds towards the end of a twelve hour shift!

Hospitality - LOCATION:
Australians love eating, and they love drinking even more, so there is no shortage of hospitality outlets in the cities. Suburban malls also offer good opportunities for work in their food courts.

Hospitality - DURATION:
In tourist areas, you can pick up a few months work without breaking the conditions of your visa, this also applies at Christmas when the city's pubs and clubs take on extra staff. Otherwise, some employers tend to prefer people who can commit to a more permanent role.

Hospitality - PAYMENT:
AU $11-25 - you should also get a share in tips.
