Australian Building, Labourering & Construction Work
Bricklayers, Glaziers, Builder, Carpenters, Labouring Work, Plumbing, Construction Trade Employment, Building Unions
OVERVIEW:
First things first, in NSW, you can't work on a building site without a Occupational Health and Safety in Construction Certificate, also known as a Green Card. You can do this during the week at the TCP in Sydney, and the course includes injury management, hazard control, legislation and responsibility. It costs $110.
For jobs, check the local papers or building networks on the web. Many casual labouring jobs are found by word of mouth, so ask around. Any large, sunburnt men with dusty hands and sleeveless shirts are a good bet.
TASKS:
This is going to be physically demanding, heavy work, usually outdoors. If you've got a trade, bricklayer or scaffolder for example, you can get well paid specialised work. If not, you'll be fetching and carrying most of the time. Make sure you're up to it.
LOCATION:
Head for places undergoing a 'building boom', e.g. the Northern Sydney suburbs, and Melbourne, which is transforming its docklands and factory sites in apartment complexes and entertainment centres. Beach side suburbs are often undergoing development too.
DURATION:
On a large building site with lots of work available, you could work out the whole three months your working holiday visa will allow. On smaller sites, doing labouring jobs work may only last a few days or a week, and you may not be given a great deal of notice to finish up.
PAYMENT:
AU$18 to $AU60 an hour. If you have certain certification, for example you are an experienced crane driver you can earn allot more.
