Au Pair Jobs - OVERVIEW:
Being an Au Pair is basically being a live in carer of young children. Particularly if you have the childcare qualifications, there are plenty of live-in au pair & nanny positions available in Australia. It's best to sign up with recruitment agencies specialising in childcare as this is where most families look for a reputable au pair. However local papers are a good place to look for nanny jobs placed directly by families.
Any Au Pair work tends to be heavy on responsibility, your tasks are varied, and whilst the children are around you are pretty much at work. If you're staying in a family home, you'll need to respect how the family does their day to day routines and you'll be expected to set a good example for the children. A patient attitude and a general love for children is a good quality to have in this kind of work.
Au Pair - TASKS:
General care of the children. You'll be cooking meals, playing with the kids taking them places like the park or sporting commitments. Sometimes for younger children you'll have to bathe them & change nappies. It is likely you'll be required to help with household chores too. A driver's licence is almost always required as a live in au-pair as you'll be dropping off and picking the kids up from school etc.
Au Pair - LOCATION:
You'll will usually find yourself in the middle to upper class suburbs surrounding cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane etc, where families can afford the luxury of a live-in Au Pair.
Au Pair - DURATION:
For Au Pair work there is a minimum stay of at least a few months, but commonly families would prefer 6 to 12 months. Finding an Au Pair to live in a family home and building a trust relationship takes time so Au Pair is generally never short term employment.
